To "lake walk" is to walk around the circumference of Madison, WI's Lake Mendota. The Mendota Mental Health Institute has a watertower that serves as a key landmark for walkers who start along the isthmus. Though it seems impossibly far away, in actuality it's not even halfway around the lake.
